EQUINE FACILITATED BRAIN INJURY PROGRAM

ICBC APPROVED

Why Does It Work

We work very closely with our TBI clients during their recovery and understand the main challenges faced. As trained facilitators we are able to deliver effective and valuable experiential learning activities with our horses in order to offer clients a unique alternative treatment intervention.

Combining experiential learning with Certified Equine Facilitation  (CEF) in skill development and cognitive remediation has been  well researched  and proven to deliver a powerful and unforgettable learning experience. Please note, CEFL is not a riding program, participants work from the ground with the horses to achieve the skill driven objectives.

As an approved ICBC Service Provider you may qualify for funding with a direct referral from your Occupational Therapist or Health Care Provider. If you do not have an OT please contact us for assistance with obtaining an appropriate referral request.

What Is Experiential Learning

Experiential learning is the process of learning through a particular experience, more specifically defined as learning through the reflection of doing. The same actions brings the same results. If you want long lasting, sustainable results, then you have to change your approach to learning. We understand that change happens differently in each person but that self reflection is key. This is why all sessions utilize the experiential learning model. The general concept of learning through experience is quite ancient dating back to around 350 BCE, Aristotle wrote in Nicomachean Ethics "for things we have to learn before we can do them, we learn by doing them". From a modern day educational approach, experiential learning was heavily developed in the early 1970s by David A. Kolb who laboriously drew from the work of John Dewey, Kurt Lewin, and Jean Piaget.

The Program

A unique 10 session equine facilitated program designed specifically for TBI clients. The objective of the program is life skill development and cognitive remediation. Each session builds skills for the next and follows a logical order of progression in order to meet the skill driven objectives.

Our education and experience as Clinical Kinesiologists combined with Certification in Equine Facilitated Learning means that we are able to design sessions and select horses that will best fit each client in order to reach goal oriented objectives while ensuring both parties are safe at all times. Sessions are designed to promote physical engagement, cognitive remediation, and skill development in problem solving, decision making, negotiation, self-confidence, leadership, trust, teamwork, communication, impulse control, emotional regulation, anger management and cognitive

awareness.

Additionally, the programs assist in fostering healthy coping skills. The benefits of equine facilitated skill development programs are extensive and have been documented over the last several decades.
